Narrative

Description:
The FAU Libraries are requesting $55,890 to purchase the Springer journal Archives: Earth and Environmental Science. These Springer archives consist of access to academic journals, with coverage from as early as 1832 through the last issue of 1996.

The FAU Libraries currently subscribe to the Springer journals package, which provides access to over 1,800 current Springer journals, with coverage from 1997 to present.  Springer journals are well used: over 31,000 articles were accessed by FAU students and faculty in fiscal year 2014-15.

Springer, a leading global scientific and medical publisher, has been publishing for over 170 years.  A total of 1,595 Springer journals were listed in the 2015 Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports® (JCR), a recognized authority for evaluating journals.

Springer Electronic Journal Archives are delivered online and are available 24/7.  If purchased, the content will be accessible to all students, whether on campus, via IP authentication, or off campus via EZproxy remote authentication.  The journals and articles in the collections will be easy to discover through the library catalog; the library search engine, SearchWiSE; the electronic journal listings page; librarian-created research guides; and various subject databases.

Target student population to be served by the project

The content aligns with FAU’s course offerings in Geosciences (Geology and Geography), Ocean Engineering, and Environmental Science.  In the 2013-2014 school year, 15,356 state-fundable credit hours were taken in Geosciences (http://iea.fau.edu/Reports/productivity.aspx), 10,908 of which were from lower-division courses.

Benefit to Student Learning

The Earth and Environmental Science collection contains many scholarly resources that lead their prospective fields.  The content included in this collection will directly support student learning by providing material for course papers, projects, and study.

Environmental Sciences is one of the four pillars described in Florida Atlantic University’s strategic plan.  These pillars represent the University’s most promising programs.

Timeline

We anticipate providing access to the Springer journal Archives: Earth and Environmental Science collection as soon as funds are available.

Sustainability

The requested amount will cover the one-time purchase of these subject collections. The Libraries would own the collections in perpetuity, and no access fees would be charged. Should the Libraries consider purchasing additional subject collections, it would use funding from its general materials budget.

This resource does not require any physical space. Springer journals are online and would be available through the FAU Libraries on the SpringerLink platform.
