Narrative

The purpose of this proposal is to purchase a 3D printer for use by our undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers in the Department’s three programs.  Last year, one of our capstone design teams wanted to print out a miniature scale version on their building design to show the client what the building would look like during the first College of Engineering and Computer Science Capstone Design Showcase held at the Tech Runway. Unfortunately, none of the systems on campus could produce the 3D object for them and they had to take their file to the HackLab in West Palm Beach, and after several attempts and considerable personal expense, the miniature building never materialized. We plan to address this problem by purchasing a dedicated system so that we have our own state of the art 3D printing facility where students can bring their engineering design creations to life in minutes. A 3D printer will actually let them “print” out real, physical objects to represent their culminating capstone designs.

We have identified the uPrint SE plus from Stratasys as the best fit for our needs. Our existing software, including ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp are also compatible with these new 3D printers.

Goal 5: Building a State-of-the-Art Information Technology Environment

Being able to learn to use the cutting edge tools that are being used today in the industry will put FAU students at the forefront. Without it, our students are at a disadvantage.

Goal 7: Increasing the University’s Visibility

Being able to present in written, oral, and now tactile formats will allow student in the Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatics Engineering to produce first class, memorable and cutting edge designs that will put the name of FAU into the community and market our students before graduation for easy entry into the workforce.

Facilities
EG203 will be renovated to install a sink for the 3D printing washing station. There is plumbing in the south wall that was capped many years ago because the room used to be kitchenette, so minimal work is necessary to convert the space into the perfect 3D print shop.
