Fifty-eight percent of all FAU students received some type of financial aid in 2014. That means 15,080 students interacted in some way with the Office of Student Financial Aid. Many of these 15,080 students contacted the Scholarship Resource Center, set up an appointment with questions or applied online for FAU scholarships. The need to create prepared and knowledgeable student scholarship applicants has never been greater. Many of the scholarships have specific provisions that require careful reading and response. Scholarship committees deserve to read the very best and pertinent essays from FAU students.
With this in mind, we would like to request tech equipment for the Scholarship Resource Center that would enable us to work in groups with students and parents, while going over details of the scholarships that the students are eligible for. We would like to set up 3 IPAD stations with the IPad held securely in stands to prevent misplacement or theft. The IPad would allow parents and students to follow along with our instruction so that they could replicate the process when they left the office. We have a round table now with five chairs so 3 IPAD stations would work well. As we are short on lighting in the Scholarship Resource Center as the ceiling is taken up with fire sprinklers, we are asking for lighting for the table area.
Student Goals: Student and parent understanding and knowledge of scholarship essay requirements, application procedures and appropriate scholarships to apply for. During the past scholarship application cycle we were inundated by large numbers of ineligible students applying for scholarships not directly applicable to their background or qualifications. In an attempt to match the correct applicants with the appropriate scholarships we have planned a series of workshops in our office to assist students and even parents with the scholarship application procedures.
Staff Goals: To increase student understanding of the scholarship options available to them at FAU and to create an appropriately qualified applicant pool for the scholarship committees to select from.
