Narrative
The Social Science and Social Entrepreneurship Laboratory project will transform the existing social science laboratory in HC 112 from a static storage area into a dynamic workspace for social science and social entrepreneurship students. Each year, the Kenan Social Engagement Program funds up to five students to implement business plans they develop in their social entrepreneurship course. Transforming the space in HC 112 into a collaborative workspace with online and hard copy resources will provide these students with dedicated office space to incubate their social ventures and make a broader impact on the community. The five OpitPlex 9030 All-in-One machines requested in this grant will replace the antique and non-functioning equipment currently stored in the social science lab. Because the office is has lockbox key, students will be able to work in this space both during regular hours when regular labs are open and during evening hours. In the fast-paced world of social entrepreneurship, a flexible schedule is a necessary precondition for student success.

The projects our students work on include ventures designed to break the cycle of homeless, address food insecurity, assist with immigrant integration, and address other pressing social needs here in Palm Beach County. These projects and this laboratory will directly contribute to FAU’s platforms of Community Engagement and Economic Development and Leadership, Innovation and Entrepreneurship and will enhance the college’s ability to work “with a diverse set of local stakeholders and enhance the physical spaces to build upon the unique cultural, demographic and environmental characteristics of each campus community – striving for leadership in developing the South Florida culture and economy.”
