Narrative

The College of Engineering is committed to providing our faculty and students with as many technological skills as possible. Not only will this boost the students’ confidence, it will expose them to the type of equipment they will be expected to operate beyond the classroom. This proposal will provide the faculty with the necessary equipment to better prepare the students while simultaneously positioning the students for success in their chosen field(s). Additionally, this equipment is needed to maintain FAU’s ABET accreditation which takes into account equipment relevance.

Specifically, we are developing  an inventory of parts. This will enable the students to check-out the needed items and pursue the momentum of “research and development” (R&D) and exploration that would be diminished or lost by having to wait days before their part(s) arrive. This will keep the students engaged in their field and propel them forward.

The items include:

Sensors: The interface between the human world and computers;

Microcontroller: Small computers to control and interpret the world around us.

Robotics parts: Assorted components to build, modify and/or repair robotic devices

These parts would benefit hundreds of students weekly. The classes / projects that will most benefit from the Portable Lab include:

  • EGN 1002 - Fundamentals of Engineering

  • EEL  4220 Electrical Machines

  • EEL  4652 Control Systems 1

  • EEE  3300 Electronics 1

  • EEE  4361 Electronics 2

  • CDA  3331 Intro Microprocessor Systems

  • CDA  4630 Intro to Embedded System Design

  • EGM 4045 Electro-Mechanical Devices

  • EML 4500 Machine Design 1

  • EML 4262 Machine Design 2

  • COT 4935 - Senior Seminar

  • Engineering Club Workshops, Meetings and Seminars

  • Senior Undergraduate Student Projects

  • Marine Robotics Club

This inventory will help students simultaneously explore and experience how electronics is applied in the field and how electronics is essential to practically every other discipline. Everyone from geologists to surveyors, environmentalists to architects, doctors to teachers depend on electronics like never before.
