Narrative
The Department of Visual Arts & Art History-Graphic Design program in Davie requests funds to replace 20 out-of-date Mac computers in the dedicated LA340 Graphic Design classroom on the Davie Campus. LA 340 is one-of-two dedicated computer classrooms used by the Graphic Design program in need of an upgrade. The lab is currently equipped with 20 computers manufactured in 2011, including one instructor station. Taking into account that the industry standard for hard drive life expectancy is 5 years, we are experiencing the disadvantages of working on older computers while using robust, specialized graphic design software. BTS service requests are increasing. Part of our commitment to students is to provide them with industry-standard tools to support their education in preparation for their professional careers. The courses taught in this classroom make extensive use of the Adobe Creative Cloud Package where students work on a variety of projects, from brand identity, packaging, app development, and web design to applied digital photography. Our program courses are studio-based with students spending a considerable amount of class time working on their projects on these computers. Around 11 studio classes are offered each year in this lab. These classes meet twice a week in 3-hour sessions adding to the many hours of continuous use by our students. Additional supervised open lab hours provide access to the hardware and software between courses and add “miles” to these well-used machines. Providing this lab with new computers and essential peripherals will ensure its continued usability by the approximately 70 Graphic Design majors enrolled in Davie courses each semester. The acquisition of new computers acknowledges the importance of the intersection of traditional art and design with digital technologies. With replacement computers, we will be able to continue to offer the VAAH undergraduate curriculum in Graphic Design on the Davie campus.
