Narrative
Summary This proposal requests the replacement of 100 Livescribe Echo digital smartpens that have reached the end of their life-cycle and in addition requests 20 Notetalker software and hardware assistive technology note taking equipment sets for use by registered students with disabilities for note taking in FAU classes. Project Details The Livescribe digital smartpen program implemented by Student Accessibility Services (SAS) has proven to be a highly successful implementation of Student Technology Fee Proposal funds for an assistive technology tool. Students have continued to demonstrate a strong need for the digital smartpens and find that they are an essential tool to facilitate their academic success. The digital smartpens provide digital text and synchronized audio during the student note taking process in class. The SAS has found this to be a highly effective tool for many disabilities including memory loss, audio processing challenges, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a wide range of other disabilities. The second item in this proposal is Notalker. This is a specialized audio note taking solution for students with disabilities, consisting of a mobile application which synchronizes with Windows or Apple software. This solution also includes a directional microphone to receive audio in the classroom. This kit allows students with disabilities to effectively record audio notes which they can annotate and expand into their own study materials. This is of great benefit to many students who have difficulty in acquiring information in the classroom environment. This proposal requests a total of 20 Audio Note talker assistive technology kits to meet student needs in Student Accessibility Services.
