Narrative
Summary Florida Atlantic University currently has a serious accessibility challenge due to a lack of closed captioning for video and audio course content and other informational content provided to students at the University. This proposal requests the purchase and implementation of a closed captioning hardware appliance as an effective first step to significantly increase the amount of closed captioned content available to students who are deaf and hard of hearing. This proposal will provide a practical means by which closed captions can be created by individuals across the FAU community to make all newly developed multimedia course content and informational materials accessible. This will also create a method to meet legal requirements by the Americans with Disabilities Act As Amended (ADAAA) and Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. Implementation This closed captioning implementation will consist of a Docsoft AV hardware captioning creation appliance, training and an equipment maintenance plan. The Docsoft appliance will allow designated FAU staff members to upload video and audio content to this appliance which will be maintained by Student Affairs and will be available to the FAU community. The appliance will use voice recognition to provide and an unedited transcript which the staff member will edit for corrections. A caption file can then be generated in a chosen format to match the multimedia content, which can be uploaded the Canvas Learning Management System or a designated method of display. Users will also have the option to upload video transcripts for synchronized closed caption creation.
