Narrative
The College of Engineering & Computer Science is looking to acquire an all “Flash” array. Specifically a Dell Compellent all flash array (AFA) storage unit to improve the performance of student virtual desktops. The student virtual desktops currently live on an older storage solution which utilizes the more traditional hard drive spinning disk technology. The newer all flash solution uses technology similar to what’s found on a thumb drive but scaled to meet the demands of workloads that require a higher through put. The total price for the Dell Compellent storage server is $43K which includes a 5 year next business day onsite warranty. The college is able to set aside funds to cover 50% of the cost which comes out to be $21.5K. We are asking the tech fee committee for the remaining funds which is $21.5K. Please strongly consider the fact that the college is providing 50% matching funds for the system when making your final decision. Student virtual desktops are very dynamic with the needs of our students constantly evolving. A high performance storage server utilizing the flash technology would be able to load software applications much faster. For example Matlab software which all of our students use would take 20 seconds to launch on flash storage as compared to 2-3 minutes to launch on an older storage system. For our students this makes a difference as it speeds up the time in which they are able to complete their assignments. We feel that from a storage server perspective an all flash array solution is the way to go and that it will deliver the performance our students need.
