Narrative
The College of Engineering maintains a desktop cloud (VMWare) that allows our students to access engineering applications and tools from anywhere on campus or off campus. Over the past six years that this technology has been deployed, we have been able to allow our local and distance learning students’ access to software that normally would require them to come to a specific computer lab. It has also allowed student who use non-windows computers (such as Macs and Chromebooks) or tablet users to access windows desktops. We have received many positive comments from our students, faculty and external accreditation (ABET) reviewers on the benefits of this technology.
The license for the software is purchase on an annual or multi-year contract. We have normally purchase multi-year contracts in order to secure higher discounts and to allow operations over fiscally lean years where funding may be difficult.
The Engineering IT staff is requesting techfee funding for 50% of the cost of our 3 year extension of our license.
