Narrative
Studio VA 105 is an integral locus for the Department of Visual Arts and Art History, as it serves dual functions as both e-classroom and presentation hall for visiting artists, curators, art historians, and other professionals within the visual arts. VA 105’s noon time lecture series, which occur eight to ten times a semester, have become a mainstay within the academic landscape of the department; often incorporated into multiple classes across different areas. Likewise, the studio courses conducted in VA 105 have benefited from the ready access to a multitude of digital mediums, easy access to internet resources, and a platform for students to present their work with professional equipment. VA 105’s success as an educational agent within Florida Atlantic University is due to the combined efforts of Professor Carol Prusa and a previous grant committee to invest in and lay out the foundation for a solid digital space within the department, installing and incorporating over sixteen thousand dollars’ worth of equipment in 2010. However, while the equipment has been handled and maintained with care, the iMac from which all this equipment orbits is over six years old and is in need of replacement. As is common knowledge concerning technology, time leads to obsolescence. VA 105’s current iMac is rapidly being outpaced by the needs and demands of next generation software. This is especially problematic as all areas of art are in the process of integrating previously out of reach technologies, such as professional grade 3-D modeling programs, game engines, VR, and video editing software. Many of these programs are now available to educators and students through either open source offerings or free student licenses. The continued and future success of our art programs rests in our ability to stay abreast with the shifting demands of the digital landscape. The proposed iMac upgrade is robust yet within a reasonable expense range, easily carrying the needs of the e-classroom until the next upgrade five to six years from installation. Specifically, the new computer would have the computational power to render and compile data heavy programs such as Maya and Unity, which can be folded into the curriculum of our current studio courses. Also, the inclusion of a new computer would allow us to use the older model as a more study-centric machine within the classroom. In addition to the cost of a new computer, this upgrade will require the acquisition of the necessary licenses for the Adobe Creative Cloud, which is the cornerstone of a digital media environment. The total cost for the computer is $2,185.95 and $1,007 for a four year license of the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite. This upgrade would service multiple classes, as VA 105 is used for both painting and seminar classes, and the student body of the department,as a whole, in terms of the noon time lecture series.
