Narrative
The College of Engineering is committed to providing our faculty and students with as many technological skills as possible. Not only will this boost the students’ confidence, it will expose them to the type of equipment they will be expected to operate beyond the classroom. Many of our current Lab Benches have equipment that is over 10 years old (they have floppy disks for data storage). This proposal will provide the faculty with necessary equipment to better prepare the students while simultaneously positioning the students for success in their chosen field(s). Additionally, this equipment is needed to maintain FAU’s ABET accreditation which takes into account equipment relevance.
LAB EE96.208 has an occupancy of 24 students. This grant will allow the students to work in teams of three.
This multi-channel test equipment allows students to see what how their electronics circuits actually work and is used to facilitate the designing, testing and debugging of computer and electronic circuits.
The Senior Design project(s) often use microcomputers. Currently there is one Logic Analyzer, (circa 1995) for all of the CEECS labs. This multi-channel test equipment is used to facilitate the designing, testing and debugging of computer circuits. The Fundamentals of Engineering students would achieve a greater appreciation of electronics and computers by seeing the results of their lab experiments. The added benefit to this platform is that they can be upgraded and expanded as needed with more options ensuring their viability for years to come.
Classes / Projects that will most benefit from this include:
ENG1002 Fundamentals of Engineering (typically over 400 students)
Engineering Club Workshops, Meetings and Seminars
Senior Undergraduate Student Projects (~100 students)
This equipment will provide a window into electronics with sophistication and clarity at an incredibly reasonable price point. The Senior Design project(s) often use microcomputers. We currently do not have any multiple-channel test equipment to facilitate the designing, testing and debugging of computers. The Fundamentals of Engineering students would achieve a greater appreciation of Electronics and Computers by seeing the results of their lab experiments. These platforms are expandable and upgradable with more options and incorporate enhanced capabilities ensuring their viability for years to come.
The upgraded lab will begin to address several points laid-out in the FAU Strategic Plan for the Race to Excellence such as:
Excellence - in teaching, research and public service
Playing to win - and helping others win
Innovation - striving for creative solutions and continuous improvement
And takes into account the Strategic Actions and Initiatives which calls to: (in part):
Complement academic learning by preparing collegiate and pre-collegiate students for success in life through employability skills and life skills developed by involvement in public service, while integrating these experiences into the curriculum - This project will encourage interdisciplinary collaboration across various campuses to provide an invaluable service to the community.
