Narrative
The class piano lab functions as an integral, hands-on learning environment for the Department of Music. In this space, students, using piano keyboards and technology, demonstrate and integrate major components learned in several core music classes. Every music major, as a central degree requirement, must complete a series of classes held in this piano lab. Currently the lab lacks any means to demonstrate, through audio and or visual aids, exercises or examples to the entire class at one time. In addition, the basic piano lab equipment currently in use is also failing which presents a physical detriment and hindrance to the student’s learning. An upgrade to the class piano system and software would allow students to better interact with each other in real time (without changing keyboard location) through performance and ensemble playing in the following formats: 1. Lecture Mode: This mode is used to present material in a lecture format. All students hear the teacher’s microphone and instrument or computer allowing for a captive and quiet audience. 2. Practice Mode: This mode is used when the students are working independently. Each student hears only his or her own instrument or computer. In Practice Mode, the teacher has the option of “eavesdropping” on the student and initiating 2 way communication with the student for individualized instruction. 3. Group Mode: This mode is used when students are working together in groups (two or more student workstations in any conceivable configuration). Each student in a group can hear his or her own instrument as well as the instruments or computer and microphone of the other members of their group. The flexibility of this software is what will benefit the student the most since they will be able to demonstrate what they have learned and have instant feedback from the instructor. For faculty, this upgrade would provide the means necessary to engage each student in the learning process by direct contact via an iPad and headset. In addition, having the ability to organize each class by layout, take attendance, and maintain student progress/records will enable the instructor to better efficiently manage class time. With only a fifty-minute class period and on average fifteen students per class, this technology would ensure that each student is given the appropriate amount of individualized attention thus ensuring success of both faculty members and students alike.
