Narrative

The Commercial Music program is one of the most in-demand programs offered by the Department of Music with an average of 120 enrolled every year in the program. We serve many non-music majors as well through our minor in Commercial Music, offering crucial industry experience to at least 60 students every year from diverse academic disciplines. We recently hired Matt Baltrucki, assistant professor in music, who has extensive experience in audio recording and post-production work. He recently created a course in Post-Production audio that prepares students for careers in a wide array of professions related to audio for media such as sound design, mixing for broadcast media, film and video game sound mixing and on-location sound. To properly teach this course, we need to create a lab that houses the appropriate technology. The proposed facility we are looking to create in AL-138 will be a dedicated work suite with state-of-the art audio post production equipment. It will serve for both instruction and student coursework as well as faculty and student research. Emerging audio technologies such as ambisonic audio for VR (virtual reality) and binaural encoding for video streaming are just a few of the areas of applied research that can be explored here. Other courses currently taught in the program that would benefit from this room would be Music for Radio and TV Commercials, Film Scoring, Sound Recording I and II, Music Production, Topic Research, Research Project and Commercial Music Forum. This facility opens up opportunities for interdisciplinary research and creative activity. In addition to this, students working through Hoot/Wisdom Recordings, the university’s record label would also be able work on the creation of music videos, podcasts and webcasting.
