Narrative
Engineering Equipment Checkout, Power Management & Safety Lockout Using IoT
The College of Engineering is committed to providing our faculty and students with as many technological skills as possible. Not only will this boost the students’ confidence, it will expose them to the type of equipment they will be expected to operate beyond the classroom. This proposal will provide the faculty with the necessary equipment to better prepare the students while simultaneously positioning the students for success in their chosen field(s). Additionally, this equipment is needed to maintain FAU’s ABET accreditation which takes into account equipment relevance.
Specifically, An Equipment Checkout, Power Management & Safety Lockout System. This system will provide a safety lockout allowing students only to use equipment they have been trained and approved to use. The system will automatically time-out and shut off after a reasonable time if the equipment is not reactivated via smart phone before the timeout occurs. The Professors teaching a class can request the equipment be turned on for the class period.
The software for this system will be developed as a class project by the Computer Engineering / Science Department.
This system would benefit hundreds of students weekly. The classes / projects that will most benefit include:
EGN 1002 - Fundamentals of Engineering
EEL 3118 Electronics Laboratory 1
EEL 4119 Electronics Laboratory 2
EEL 4220 Electrical Machines
EEL 4652 Control Systems 1
