Narrative

This proposal seeks to increase the technological capabilities of the Visual Arts and Art History Sculpture Studio at the Boca Raton campus for the benefit of all students. The funds requested will bring the Sculpture facilities/studio to a place where students can fully engage with current technology in the studio. The VA107 Sculpture Studio currently has a dedicated rapid prototyping space called the Digital Bunker. This dedicated space houses one Universal laser cutter and two industry standard 3D printers. This equipment was successfully funded from 2013 and 2014 tech fee grant applications. The Digital Bunker is a hub of activity and allows for new ideas and new technologies to be a central focus for all FAU students. The funds requested will go toward the acquisition of: two 21.5-inch iMac’s and two sets of the complete Adobe Creative Suite. The department currently has dedicated computer labs, but often these labs are booked because of classes, so the hours for students to use the computers are quite limited. The workflow process for the laser cutter and 3D printers often encompass tiny file hic-ups that can be easily fixed in minutes if there is a computer near that has the needed capabilities. If the students have two dedicated computers that directly integrate with the Digital Bunker’s current technology, the workflow for FAU students will be seamless. This tech fee proposal aligns with the 2015-2025 Strategic Plan for the Race to Excellence and encompasses and stresses the excellence in undergraduate education and the student experience and the organizational efficiency of the university. These technological tools will enhance the learning environment for all Visual Art and Art History students and beyond. By making VA107 a studio with two new computers that have the complete adobe suite, it becomes an “active” place for a free exchange of ideas. This upgrade will produce concrete possibilities so our students can fix files, share files, and create a seamless workflow in conjunction with the Digital Bunker. From the curriculum of all Foundations classes all the way through Advanced, as well as student clubs, and interdisciplinary research, all FAU students can use the technology. This will not only increase program quality for current students, but will play a significant role in recruiting high quality, digital-age students to the graduate and undergraduate ranks.
