Narrative

The FAU Libraries are requesting $55,256 to purchase e-books published in 2015 by Springer.

Description
The one-time purchase of two Springer e-book frontlist collections, Computer Science ($36,209 for 1,150 titles) and Mathematics & Statistics ($19,047 for 545 titles), covers all e-books published by Springer in these subject areas for copyright year 2015.

Springer e-books come with unlimited usage and access rights, and they are very convenient to download.

All content is compatible with mobile devices (tablets, smart phones, etc.) Faculty are welcome to use the books for course adoption, and doing so would allow students the opportunity to access their class textbook without having to pay for its purchase or rental.

The requested amount will cover the purchase of the two subject collections. Springer does not charge access fees for their e-books.

Target Student Population to Be Served by the Project

This project would primarily serve undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (total enrollment of 2,691) and the College of Science. In the College of Science (total enrollment of 5,529), the Department of Mathematical Sciences currently serves over 125 undergraduate students and approximately 61 graduate students. In the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (CEECS) currently serves over 654 undergraduate students and approximately 176 graduate students.

In addition, these departments serve the needs of many non-major students, and support faculty and student research. During the 2014-2015 school year, a total of 58,055 State Fundable Student Credit Hours were taken in CEECS and Mathematical Sciences.

Promoting STEM education and research is one of FAU’s key priorities. These e-books would provide excellent content to further this goal. This content will directly support student learning by providing material for course papers, projects, and study.

Due to the increasingly interdisciplinary trends in academic research, many of the e-book titles could also be of interest to students in multiple departments.
